Vale Major-General Paul Cullen, 1909 - 2007

Major-General Paul Cullen, who died on September 19 at the age of 98, contributed much to Australia and the world. In 1967 he founded Austcare, the refugee aid organization, but his career went much further (for example, his work for the blind):

"As a distinguished soldier, financier and grazier, Paul Cullen’s community spirit and endeavours went beyond Austcare and the Refugee Council. He also served as president or chairman of a number of organisations including the Australian Jewish Welfare Society, the Australian Council for Overseas Aid, the Royal Blind Society, the United Nations Association of Australia, and the Australian Overseas Disaster Response Organisation."

In 1981, he was the recipient of the prestigious Nansen Refugee Award for his services to refugees.

I did not learn of Paul Cullen's death until today. He was a good citizen of whom I have fond memories from my days at Austcare.
