Buyout may benefit National Party mates

Australia: "Companies linked with senior Nationals identities -- including former leader Doug Anthony -- could benefit from the Howard Government's $3 billion proposal to buy out Murray-Darling basin water licences.

"With cotton named as the biggest water guzzler in the basin, relations between the Coalition and the cotton industry are under scrutiny as John Howard lobbies the Labor premiers to support his $10 billion Murray-Darling plan.

"While most cotton growers paid nothing or nominal sums for water allocations, they stand to be the big winners from the proposal, contained in the Prime Minister's Murray-Darling overhaul, to buy water licences."
