Kilroy was here
1962 The death of James J Kilroy, 60, formerly a rivetting inspector at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts, USA. It is believed by some that it was he who started the 'Kilroy was here' slogan popular in World War II. American servicemen began placing the graffiti wherever the US Forces landed, claiming it was already there when they arrived.
In Australia, virtually the same mark was called 'Foo was here'; it is said to have been widely used by Australians during WWI, and was later also widely used during WWII ...
