Poisoned Australian 'Labor tree' dies

Sad news that Australia's Tree of Knowledge has died, some four months after having been poisoned by vandals.

"IF LABOR supporters fear the death of the iconic Tree of Knowledge is a metaphor for the fate of the party, they can take heart.

"They may soon be able to buy seedlings from the tree under which rebel shearers agitated for a workers' party - the genesis of today's Labor Party.

"The tree, in Barcaldine, Queensland, was declared dead this week after a vandal drenched it with pesticide earlier this year. But the DNA of the ghost gum lives on, thanks to an offspring tree propagated from its seed about 15 years ago.

"Barcaldine's leaders and agricultural officials are planning a Tree of Knowledge nursery to propagate seedlings for sale."
