May 3, the Hottentot Venus is at last laid to rest

2002 The remains of Saartje Baartman (1789 - 1816), the so-called 'Hottentot Venus' (pictured), were returned to South Africa at the request of President Nelson Mandela. Harvard academic, the late Stephen Jay Gould, had campaigned for her return.
