Wild Bill Hickok and the Dead Man's Hand 1876 USA: Wild Bill Hickok (James Hickok; James Butler Hickok), US Marshal and fastest gun in the west, was shot in the back by Jack McCall while playing poker in the Deadwood Saloon, Deadwood, South Dakota. McCall was later tried and hanged on March 1, 1877.

On July 21, 1865, in the market square of Springfield, Missouri, Hickok shot Dave Tutt dead in what is regarded as the first true western showdown.
