First summiting of Mount Everest
1953 On the 500th anniversary of the conquest of Constantinople came the 'conquest' of Qomolongma (Mount Everest). New Zealand beekeeper, Edmund Hillary (1919 - 2008) and the Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay (1914 - '86) reached the summit of the world's tallest mountain, the first people to do so.
In Nepal, the mountain is called Sagarmatha ('forehead of the sky') and in Tibet, Qomolongma (Chomolangma – 'Mother of the Universe') ...
