Bring back the Milky Way to our towns and dreams!
A friend in a rural USA town of 60,000 people writes, "I haven't seen the Milky Way in years". And I replied:
I guess in a town your size, the Milky Way wouldn't be so visible. But it must be blazing ten miles out of town, surely?
You should see the Milky Way a mile outside my small town. It would knock your brains out!! It blazes right across the whole sky, with countless stars. So many stars that it is indeed milky.
http://www.darksky.org/mc/page.do and http://www.darkskysociety.org/ will help people to campaign to change the problem. There are solutions available to bring back our natural heritage (the stars and the Milky Way) to our night skies. It's not right that for millions of years our people have delighted to this amazing spectacle, and in less than 100 years we have got rid of it. It's like we threw our dreaming away. We humans NEED the Milky Way every night. Let's bring it back.
Indeed, if you have no Milky Way, demand that your town authorities bring it back. It is possible.

Spent a week living on the beach in Baja this past January. Velvet black nightness with bazillions of stars and the milky way.
Just wanted to let you know that I stopped by. Albuquerque, New Mexico--where there is far too much light pollution. Miles of big sky and open space just outside the city. No beach.
Interesting. I was just looking up Port Macquarie because I do triathlons. Engaging blog with beauty and activism written all over it.
