1818 Lucy Stone (d. October 18, 1893) American feminist theorist, suffragist who supported African-American women’s rights. She was the wife of abolitionist Henry Brown Blackwell (1825 - 1909) (the brother of Elizabeth Blackwell [1821 - 1910], America's first female physician) and the mother of Alice Stone Blackwell (1857 - 1950), another prominent suffragette, journalist and human rights defender. Lucy Stone was the first woman in Massachusetts to receive a college degree.

Stone's refusal to be known by her husband's name, as an assertion of her own rights, was controversial then and is what she is most remembered for today ...
