All the green stuff at left of pic is watermelons ... miniature ones. The foliage and flowers are exquisite.

In foreground are potatoes coming up. Soon I will plant something else alongside them. Quite a few cobs of corn are half-formed. Borlotti beans -- I don't like them to eat so will plant some green beans. The lettuce were great, but are starting to bolt and need to stick some more in. The red-green curly-leafed lettuce is the best to grow and eat by far.

I discovered something yesterday morning. The previous night I moved a couple of melon vines while I put newspaper and lawn clippings on the ground, as the vines have spread across to a new area that was not yet a no-dig garden (just weeds that the vines were starting to grip on to). When I replaced the vines, I couldn't get them to lie correctly, with the leaves pointing up. But in the morning they were all exactly as they were before I messed them up. They have some very cool auto-directional device. All plants do, but I was amazed at the speed and effectiveness of these vines. They looked awful when I moved them, but fresh and beautiful by morning. Each plant has about three main vine stems, some of them about 3 metres long, with some side branches also getting quite long (you can see one is starting to climb the fence). That's also a watermelon in the right of frame.

Go to last No-dig garden update December 12/06 and that will take you to all updates and the beginning on October 22.
