Can atheists be parents?

John and Cynthia Burke of Newark, USA, have had the devil's own time with adoption authorities first, and now with a Superior Court judge. They want to adopt a child, but they don't believe in that bearded man in the sky, so they are forced to waste time and money in the law courts.

Thanks, Baz 'Adoptive Parent of the Year' le Tuff.

Update: The Time magazine article is popping up all over the Net, but, as a commenter mentions, the dateline is 1970. Sorry about that.

Christians don't believe in him either... that's why in the first centuries AD, the Romans referred to the Christians as 'atheists'!

Y'know, I read that article at Time that you reference here but what bugged me is the dateline.

It's from 1970.

I wonder how it turned out?

By the way, I pointed that out, not to be snide or correcting, but simply to hi-light that it was apparently a very old story. Yet, I can't find any other information on it.

If this did occur 36 years or so years ago, how the heck did it turn out? What's the end of the story? Has anyone found more about this? Is the dateline wrong or is there simply no information out about this story?
