Out of the Blue

Highly recommended
Democratic US presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich said he saw one. So did Jimmy Carter, not to mention John Lennon and other celebrities. Astronaut Gordon Cooper (sixth man on the moon) said he filmed one on earth -- the film was confiscated by Air Force officials and he never saw it again. Astronaut Edgar Mitchell is certain that his government knows that UFOs exist.

I saw something weird in the sky in about 1982 -- my then girlfriend and I saw it together -- but it was near a military base so I've always been quite happy to concede that it was probably a military aircraft (but it did move across the sea horizon south of Seal Rocks, New South Wales at a speed that neither of us could conceive of even a supersonic aircaft travelling).

I'm a confirmed UFO skeptic, which I think is the only sane position to take, but Out of the Blue is a very impressive documentary on this enduring mystery. High-level scientists, government officials and Air Force personnel are interviewed, and revealing official documents are shown. The documentary looks at many remarkable UFO events, such as the Phoenix, Arizona lights of 1997 (see movie clip below), which were witnessed by thousands of people, all in different locations. Interestingly, it shows the press conference of former Arizona Governor Fife Symington, in which he ridicules the sightings.

However, since the film was made, the governor admitted that he, too, had seen the Phoenix lights:

"I'm a pilot and I know just about every machine that flies. It was bigger than anything that I've ever seen. It remains a great mystery. Other people saw it, responsible people. I don't know why people would ridicule it."

Meanwhile, at a (USA) National Press Club conference last month, an unprecedented panel of military and government personnel from seven nations called for the USA to investigate the UFO phenomenon. Remarkabley, Governor Symington moderated this panel -- you can read the statements of the panellists here. The panellists were:

Fife Symington, Former Arizona Governor, Moderator
Ray Bowyer, Captain, Aurigny Air Services, Channel Islands
Rodrigo Bravo, Captain and Pilot for the Aviation Army of Chile
General Wilfried De Brouwer, former Deputy Chief of Staff, Belgian Air Force (Ret.)

Excerpt from Out of the Blue:

After watching Out of the Blue, I'm sure that an open, transparent, high-level USA Government enquiry is a good idea. The movie has persuaded me with strong, hard-to-refute documentation that many things are known about UFOs and being kept secret by persons as yet unknown.
