The Sinking of the SIEVX resource for high schools

Email received today about Australia's notorious SIEV-X disaster and I commend its contents to teachers and parents of high school pupils:

Hi all -

Please find below information about "The Sinking of the SIEV 'X': A Case Study for Secondary Schools". This was coordinated by a commitee headed by Don Maclurcan, and was launched last week in Canberra, where it was enthusiastically received by historians, teachers and those working for refugees. It is quite separate from the memorial project, but we thought you might be interested.

Regards
Beth Gibbings

Siev X Case Study

A Case Study that investigates the Sinking of the SIEV X was launched at Parliament House, Canberra, on October 19th and is now available for use within Australian schools.

The Case Study has been developed by an independent group of citizens who take no position in terms of the events that surround the sinking, nor do the set of materials presented imply predetermined outcomes in terms of the questions asked.

The group consulted widely and acted on advice from a number of history teachers to produce what the group believe to be a balanced set of materials that investigates a tragic, yet intriguing event in recent Australian history.

The study is aimed at year 11 modern history classes in NSW but may be adapted by other States and territories to fit within other subjects and syllabi.

Copies can be purchased at $10 each (plus postage and handling). Full details, as well as a chance to review and order the Case Study, are available at: www.sievxreader.com
